The tragedy of Animal farm is that virtue looses its reward. Orwell is clearly on the side of exploited animals.

Activity 1. Prepare materials for writing on this topic: Show how Orwell captures the reader’s sympathy for the exploited animals so that he / she feels involved in their hopes, struggles and disappointments.   Compare the passage in Chap. 2 Ecstasy  to the passage in Chap. 10 Disappointment.

Activity 2. Identify the stages in which the commandments were altered. At each point say why the alteration was made. Make seven new commandments and swap them with your partner. His/her task is to find any opportunity to add or subtract in order to change their meaning.

Squealer uses this question constantly to stop any complaint. The actual conditions under Jones are soon forgotten. Animals had nothing to which they could compare their present lives: nothing but Squealer’s figures which demonstrated that everything was getting better and better.
